Overview

Contact Energy is one of New Zealand's leading energy generators and retailers, providing electricity, natural gas and LPG to approximately 600,000 customers nationwide. Their power stations generate around 25 per cent of New Zealand's electricity, Contact Energy is one of the country's largest wholesalers and retailers of natural gas, and have around 47 per cent of the LPG market in New Zealand.

Contact is one of the country's largest listed companies and one of New Zealand's most widely held stocks with around 81,000 shareholders. Contact employs over 1,000 people throughout New Zealand, making them an integral part of the national economy, our diverse society and local communities.

Contact has been in operation since 1996, when it acquired a portfolio of electricity generation and gas assets from the state owned electricity generator, ECNZ (Electricity Corporation of New Zealand). The Company was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in May 1999. In October 2004, Origin Energy became Contact’s majority shareholder.

Incentives

Kick Start Plan - Kick Start is a special introductory pricing plan for electricity only. On Kick Start, prices stay the same for the term of the plan unless there are changes to taxes or levies, or if the information Contact has relied on to set your price requires amendment. At the end of the plan, you will be charged the standard applicable price. If you switch from Contact during the plan period an offer cancellation fee of $150 for business accounts may apply - Terms and Conditions.

Dual Energy Discount - Contact Energy's DualEnergy™ discount means new and existing customers who combine their gas (natural gas or Rockgas LPG) and electricity with Contact will receive a discount of 40 cents a day for every full billing period - that's over $160 every year (including GST). What’s more, you'll have just one energy company to deal with and one bill to pay each month (one bill excludes Rockgas LPG).

Business Power - As a Contact customer you are able to access your account online, free and securely around the clock.

Your online account allows you to -

  • Get an up-to-date summary of your accounts.
  • View a graph of your energy usage so you can compare month-on-month for the last two years.
  • Review your transaction history for the last 12 months.
  • Check when your next meter reading is scheduled.

Energy Challenger - Contact Energy offer an easy-to-use tool designed especially for medium and larger sized businesses, i.e. those spending between $50,000 and $500,000 a year on energy. (Energy Challenger requires Microsoft Internet Explorer V5.0 or above to run.)

Using Energy Challenger is a quick way for your business to assess its energy management. The tool produces a rating and, based on that score, identifies opportunities to improve your businiesses energy use. It aims to help you identify opportunities to reduce waste and associated costs.

How often will my meters be read?
Contact Energy use a smart meter that will provide a monthly read. For sites not fitted with a smart meter, Contact Energy will typically have a meter reader manually read the meter every second month. You may be asked to provide specific access details to assist the reader in gaining this read.
My current retailer installed a smart meter and can read it remotely. Will my new retailer be able to read this meter remotely also?
Your new retailer may not necessarily be able to read your current Smart meter. Some retailers have the technology to remotely read other retailer's meters, but this is not always the case. If you find your meter is incompatible with your new chosen retailer they will continue to send a meter reader to manually read it, or continue producing estimate bills when this is not possible.

How will I be invoiced for multiple sites?
Contact Energy can send individual invoices by site or provide a summary of your business as a whole if they supply to more than one site. You can choose whichever method suits you best.
