Genesis Energy is the largest electricity and gas retailer in New Zealand, having 27% and 42% of the market respectively. Genesis also produces approximately 23% of New Zealand's electriciy via a diverse generation portfolio of both renewable and non-renewable resources from all over the country.

  • Genesis' meters are advanced. Genesis have also started upgrading their customers old electricity meters to Genesis Energy Advanced Meters - which means there'll be no more estimated readings, estimated bills and visits from meter readers*.
  • Genesis make bills easy. As well as helping you keep your energy costs under control, they will roll your electricity and natural gas into one bill and take 10% off when you pay your bill in full and on time. Plus, they will make life easier by offering loads of ways to pay your bill, such as direct debit, credit card payments or internet banking.

Who owns Genesis?
Genesis Energy are a State-owned enterprise. They are overseen by a board of directors who report directly to the government.
Where is their head office?
The Genesis Energy head office is in Greenlane, Auckland.
How often will my meters be read?
Genesis Energy have a smart meter that will provide a monthly read. For sites not fitted with a smart meter, Genesis will typically have a meter reader manually read the meter every second month. You may be asked to provide specific access details to assist the reader in gaining this read.
My current retailer installed a smart meter and can read it remotely. Will my new retailer be able to read this meter remotely also?
Your new retailer may not necessarily be able to read your current Smart meter. Some retailers have the technology to remotely read other retailer's meters, but this is not always the case. If you find your meter is incompatible with your new chosen retailer they will continue to send a meter reader to manually read it, or continue producing estimate bills when this is not possible.

Yes, Genesis' "My Account" online portal allows users to check their balances, previous balances and transactions, load reads and more.
